PCI Compliance and Your Business

PCI Compliance and Your Business

The days of the cash-only business are gone. It doesn’t matter if your business is a multinational corporation or you cut grass for a living, accepting payment cards is not only convenient for your customers, most of the time it’s the most secure way to get paid. In an effort to protect the personal and financial information of consumers who have come to depend on their payment cards, the banks that back the credit card industry have developed a regulation to which businesses who process cards need to adhere. Today, we will go over this regulation and how it affects small and medium-sized businesses.

Checking in on Net Neutrality

Checking in on Net Neutrality

When we write about Net Neutrality, we typically write about how it is designed to keep the telecommunications conglomerates, who make Internet service available to individuals on the Internet, honest when laying out their Internet service sales strategy. One way to put it is that, without net neutrality in place, the Big Four (which are currently Comcast, Charter, Verizon, and AT&T) have complete control over the amount of Internet their customers can access.

Can You Stay Compliant While Using the Cloud?

Can You Stay Compliant While Using the Cloud?

One of the inevitabilities of working with the cloud is that you have to face a tough question; what kind of compliance requirements are there for cloud-based data? If you’re storing data for your business in a cloud-based environment, it becomes your responsibility to know where and how this data is stored--particularly if you’re not the one doing the actual cloud hosting. How do you maintain compliance when you seemingly have so little control over how your computing platform is managed and maintained?

Medical IT: How Is HITECH Doing?

Medical IT: How Is HITECH Doing?

Compliance laws regarding the storage and dispersion of healthcare records were implemented with the intended purpose of urging healthcare providers to better take care of their patients’ personal information, but how effective are they? Where There’s Data Loss, There’s Trouble

Where There’s Data Loss, There’s Trouble

Data loss can have lasting effects upon your business, usually measured in lost productivity and capital. In other words, data loss is often measured by the cost required to retrieve, restore, and/or repair its effects. Of course, this is only the beginning of how data loss can impact your operations.

Data Loss Implies More than Just Lost Data
While there is no denying that, when considered alone, data loss is a critical blow to your business, there are additional effects that that can be more problematic. First and foremost, you have your employees to consider.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a task in business operations today that didn’t require data in some way, shape, or form. Considering this, try to calculate a rough estimate of the impact that a critical bit of data being lost would cause. This is dependent upon what kind of data was lost. If the data belonged to a client, the sensitivity of the data would be important to consider. There’s even an online tool available to help establish if an incident has gone over the parameters outlined in your agreement.

Furthermore, the value of data factors into other considerations as well, that may not immediately come to mind during a data loss event.

Other Concerns, Regarding Customer Confidence
Never mind losing the data for a moment - what happens to the customers whose data you’ve lost?

First, let’s consider how you would likely react if a business you had entrusted your data with suddenly came to you explaining that your data was just gone. How would you react?

There are many factors that ensure that your contacts will find out, as well. Many industries are beholden by law to inform their business associates that their data has been breached. These legal requirements are also influenced by the state one does business in, what data is stored, even how the data loss took place.

As a result, you could easily find yourself struggling with a public relations nightmare, further impacting the confidence of your customers and clients.

To prevent this all from happening, you need to have the right solutions in place. CTN can deploy a comprehensive backup and disaster recovery solution. To get started, give us a call at (610) 828-5500.

Avoid Getting Fined By Understanding How Regulatory Compliance Works

Avoid Getting Fined By Understanding How Regulatory Compliance Works

Technology is invading all practices, including those of medical offices and other health-related institutions like hospitals and dental offices. With the advent of electronic medical records (EMR) and their management systems, medical institutions are capable of eliminating the physical space required to store paper documents, and can instead easily store them in a digital environment. Unfortunately, this also brings its fair share of problems, such as regulatory compliance.
